Description {Family Ericaceae} Blue Huckleberry is a deciduous shrub with small elliptical leaves arranged in elegant sprays on a many branched stem. It can grow from 0.5 to 2 m (1.5 to 6 ft) in height. It produces edible fruit. Huckleberry is found in open to dense coniferous forests on moist to dry sites. It grows well in acidic, peaty, woodland type of soils that are moist but well-drained. They like full sun or partial shade. The seed can be sown in containers in a cold frame in autumn, or directly in the ground in spring. They can also be propagated by softwood cuttings in early summer, or by layering in late summer. They are hardy, and generally disease free. Native from British Columbia down to California. |
