Description {Family Rosaceae} Ocean Spray is a beautiful flowering deciduous shrub which, in the spring, is covered in a mass of large creamy flowered plumes, 10-17 cm (4-7 in) long, which consist of masses of tiny individual flowers. It is vigorous and upright, with arching branches with gray-green leaves that are whitish underneath. It can get up to 20 feet high in some cases, but usually around 12 feet, and spreads widely. Ocean Spray is found in dry open forests and clearings and is a low maintenance garden shrub. Its size and can be easily controlled by pruning as necessary right after flowering, and it looks great in a mixed border or light woodland setting. It grows in moist but well-drained soil that is fertile and humus-rich. Sun or part shade is fine. Seed can be sown as soon as it is ripe. Take semi-ripe cuttings in summer or later in summer/autumn to increase stock. Ranges in the wild from British Columbia down the coastal regions to Southern California and New Mexico. It occurs from sea-level to high in the mountains. |
