Basil: Richly fragrant, essential for many Mediterranean dishes. Half hardy annual. Harvest May-September. Coriander: Use the fragrant leaves and seeds in curries. Hardy annual. Harvest June-September. Chives: Mild onion flavour and bright green colour enlivens almost any savoury dish. Hardy perennial. Harvest May-October. Parsley: Stronger flavoured than the curly type and just as versatile. Hardy annual. Harvest April-October.

All these herbs can also be grown very successfully in small pots on a bright, sunny windowsill or in a windowbox. Sow little bits at a time indoors and harvest almost all year round!
