Trees, Shrubs

This category of plants contains woody material in their stems that remains from season to season. New growth occurs from the framework created by last years growth. These trunks, branches and stems do not die back right down to the ground as perennials do, and their lifespan is long - years, decades or even centuries. Trees and shrubs may be kept to a desired size by regular pruning, and they form a more 'permanent' framework for a garden around which annuals, perennials, and bulbs can be planted.
