Description

The blue colour from the mix seems to be everyone’s favourite. This very showy climber, gets up to 3m (10 ft). The 10-12cm (4-5 in) blue flowers open in the morning and fade in the afternoon. Let it go up tall sunflowers. Plant when the soil is warm, where it is to bloom.

Direct-seed mid May through mid June. Soak the seeds for 2 days or nick them. Sow 3mm deep. Doesn't transplant well and likes full sun and good soil. Germinates at 20C in 14 days. Blooms in 14 weeks on a trellis. Space 30-45 cm apart. Approx. 35 seeds/g.

This genus was used by the Aztecs as a hallucinogen during their religious ceremonials, and also as a medicine. It is native to tropical America. The name Ipomoea comes from the Greek words 'ips' meaning a vine tendril and 'homoios' meaning similar. It refers to the plant's method of climbing with tendrils.
