Foeniculum vulgare 'Sweet Florence'
|
Description
A graceful plant in any garden, fern-like foliage, thick stems and bulbs which have a delicate aniseed flavour. Height 60-100cm.
Sow April to May, direct into the growing site 1cm deep in drills. Fennel should not be transplanted. Thin the seedlings when they are large enough to handle to 20-25cm apart. Bulbs will be ready about September, leaves can be used from June.
The whole plant has a flavour which has been used for centuries to flavour delicate dishes such as fish (use the leaves). The stems and bulbs can be grated raw in salads or they make a delicious braised vegetable.
