Matthiola bicornis 'Evening Scented'
|
Description
This is the true old-fashioned stock chosen for its superior fragrance. Direct seed where plants are to grow, in a place where you will smell their almond perfume after sunset. The pinky-mauve flowers open in the evening all summer. A hardy annual, sow mid-May. Approx. 1200 seeds/g.
Sow shallowly May/June, as they need light to sprout. Germinates at 21C in 7-14 days, blooms in 12 weeks in sun or part shade. Space 30cm apart; height 30cm.
Matthiola is named in honor of Peter Matthioli, an Italian garden writer from the sixteenth century. They were first discovered growing on cliffs high above the sea in England, and a number of garden varieties have been developed from the original wild species, M. incana.
